Pregnant During Summer? Here’s How You Can Handle The Heat!
Pregnancy can be a wonderful time for expecting moms, but it is also a period of time that is going to be uncomfortable. The most trying time for many pregnant women is during the summer months, when heat and humidity increase. Expect your feet to swell, your hormones to bounce around, and sweating to become the norm. The following are some tips for staying more comfortable and practicing healthy habits during summer.
Being pregnant brings the extra weight of your baby inside the uterus, and a slightly elevated body temperature. Once the summer temperatures rise, you might sweat more than you expect. You can try using a spray bottle filled with water to spritz yourself regularly. Any grocery store or dollar store should carry water spray bottles. Fill one with cool water and spray yourself when you need to cool down.
Besides your spray bottle, you are going to want a good water bottle to take with you almost everywhere. This will help you keep track of how much water you are drinking every day. If you get bored with drinking water out of a special bottle, then mix it up and have some fun with pouring it into a fun glass, like a glass mug or unique coffee cup.
Staying hydrated while you are pregnant is important for you, but it is even more important for the health of your baby. Health professionals recommend drinking two liters of water a day, although this should be discussed with your doctor. If you will be spending time in the heat, add an 8 ounce glass of water for every hour you are outside.
If you have not already bought some maternity clothes made with breathable fabric, such as cotton or cotton blends, you can find these in many stores. These materials hold heat and sweat less than others, so they are perfect for summer outings and working out when pregnant. Cotton clothing is often flattering to any shape and can be found in vast array of styles, colors, and patterns.
If you are sweating and it is hot out, one of the best ways to get relief is to jump in the pool. If you do not have access to a pool, you can take a cool shower or bath instead. If you need to, do this a few times a day to reduce the chance of overheating.
You will be visiting the bathroom often while you are pregnant due to extra water intake, hormonal changes, and pressure on your bladder. If you reduce the amount of salt in your food, you will reduce the number of times you have to urinate. Lowering your salt intake will also reduce swelling.
Barbecues and outside parties are common in the summertime. Many of your friends might serve their guests beer and alcoholic beverages at these events. You should never drink alcohol when pregnant, but you can get creative with “mocktails.” Use fresh juice, seltzer, fruit, and even yogurt to create fun drinks. These are healthier for you and can even help you stay hydrated.
This is a common condition when you are pregnant, especially during the summer months. It is important to always protect your skin when you spend time in the sun. You can use a higher SPF sunscreen than you normally would to protect your skin and wear light clothes that cover your skin.
Being pregnant can make you feel swollen and uncomfortable. Your fingers and ankles are usually the victims of this condition. You should take off your rings if your fingers are swollen. This prevents them from having to be cut off your fingers if the swelling does not go down. Pillows are great tools for elevating your legs and ankles when they become enlarged. You should elevate your feet for a hour or two every day to minimize and prevent swelling.
If you need to get out and exercise or run errands, try to do it in the morning and evening, when temperatures are cooler. Resting while it is hot and staying cool will increase your comfort during your pregnancy.
